The first Saturday in May is just around the corner, and with it comes the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby.
The 20-horse field has yet to be finalized but the post position draw for the first leg of the Triple Crown is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET on May 1.
The post position draw for the Kentucky Oaks — the 1 1/8 mile $1 million purse for 3-year-old fillies on May 4 — is scheduled for April 30 at 11 a.m. and can also be seen live on the Derby’s official pages.
The random post position drawing for the Kentucky Derby is important considering nine of the past 17 winners since 2000 started from gate No. 13 or higher, including last year’s winner, Nyquist (gate 13), American Pharoah (15), I’ll Have Another (19), Animal Kingdom (16) and Big Brown (20), according to America’s Best Racing.
Next month’s Kentucky Derby will be a huge event with a plethora of storylines surrounding the 1 1/4 mile race.
Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski said earlier this month he has purchased a minority stake in a thoroughbred that was named after him. The 3-year-old colt Gronkowski is set to run at Churchill Downs on May 5 and is currently listed at 40-1 odds to win “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports.”
Legendary thoroughbred trainer Bob Baffert’s horse Justify, who won the Santa Anita Derby by 3½ lengths earlier this month is currently listed as the favorite to win the first leg of the Triple Crown.
