In 2018, the Pegasus World Cup totaled the highest prize money in the world with a purse of $16 million. On Saturday at Gulfstream Park, the pot was split across two races — now dubbed the Pegasus World Cup Championship Invitational Series.

The two races were the $9 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1), on the dirt track at 1 1/8 miles and offering $4 million for the winner of the 12-horse field. The second race, the $7 million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1), was on the turf at 1 3/16 miles.

For being such a high-paying event, neither race came down to the wire as City Of Light and Bricks And Mortar captured the two races with relative ease on a rainy Florida afternoon.

City Of Light upset Accelerate to capture the $9 million Pegasus World Cup. He pressed pace-setter Patternrecognition throughout the 1-1/8 mile wet race and drew off down the stretch to a 5-3/4 length win.
