The Truth about Horses and Water

The Truth about Horses and Water

Posted in Camel Racing News, Horse Racing News, Racing Pigeon News

According to Dr.Marcia Hathaway of the University of Minnesota’s Animal Science Department, when horses don’t get enough water to drink, the results can be disastrous, ranging from impaction colic to dehydration to death.  Thus, it is very important that horses have a fresh, clean supply of water at all times. “A 1,000 pound horse, at rest in a cool climate, eating lush pasture needs a minimum of 3 and up to 10 gallons of water to drink each day. If supplemental water isn’t provided to horses, the incidence of colic is increased dramatically,” Dr. Hathaway, who is a professor in Muscle Growth Biology/Equine Nutrition, says in her article on The importance of water. She stresses that young horses and pregnant mares need even more water than usual.  A horse sweats about 2-4 gallons and will sweat even more when exercising or just from the heat. Dr. Hathaway adds that: “Even though there has been a loss of water and the horse is actually dehydrated, the horse may not necessarily be thirsty. This is the basis for the phrase: ‘You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink’!  You should, however, encourage your horse to drink in order to prevent further dehydration.  Ideally, dehydration should be avoided completely by allowing a horse that is working opportunities to drink every couple of hours. Although it is a common belief that a hot horse should have water withheld until it is cool, there is no scientific basis to support that belief.” Here are some interesting facts you should know about horses and water: -Water is essential and crucial in equine diets.  Sometimes, it is overlooked, despite its importance to equine health. -Horses need more water when it is cold, even at temperatures below zero.  Without fresh grass available and the air being much dryer, horses will have an increased need for water. -The more hay a horse consumes, the more water it needs. -Horses need three times as much water as they do food -Horses need water to ensure normal and optimal functioning of the gut.  Water aids in the movement of food through the digestive tract. -Drinking cold water, even after exercise, does not cause colic Dr. Hathaway adds that horses will drink more when the water offered is clean and between 45° and 64° F. “The water trough should be clean, kept out of direct sunlight, and located near a shelter but away from feed sources,” she says.
