Five-year-old Patternrecognition earned a third consecutive win in Saturday’s Grade 1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct, besting the eight-horse field at 5.40 odds by 3/4-length.
The year’s final Grade 1 race in New York, the $750,000 Cigar Mile proved to be Patternrecognition’s second straight quality start.
Last time out, he won the first stakes race of his career, the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap at Belmont Park. Patternrecognition did one better on Saturday with the outside post position draw, getting to the inside rail under jockey Jose Ortiz and besting the field in a time of 1:34.98.

Patternrecognition to win paid $12.80, while the $1 exacta paid out a cool $108. A $1 trifecta would have paid $549.50 thanks to True Timber, a 31-1 longshot, finishing second.
“He broke out of there very sharply,” Ortiz said via Paulick Report. “The way he broke, I didn’t want to give the lead away, so I used my own judgment and took a shot and went straight to the rail and took the lead. He got pressured pretty good. I took a big risk because those weren’t the instructions, but it worked out.”
The 8-5 favorite Mendelssohn finished fourth, while 2-1 second choice Copper Town finished last of eight.
Patternrecognition has now earned $812,325 in 11 starts.
