The 93rd edition of the $1,000,000.00 Hambletonian had one big question – Could the girl beat ALL of the boys?
The answer was YES!!!
Atlanta, trained by Rick Zeron and driven by his son Scott Zeron – the single filly in the prestigious race for three-year-old trotters – went wire to wire in the field of ten in 1:50.4… Mets Hall finished a length back in second, while Tactical Landing was a solid third.
“It’s unbelievable. I’ve got no words,” a misty Rick Zeron said. “When I seen Scott open up around the last turn I knew that he had her in hand and I knew that coming down the lane she wasn’t going to let us down today and neither was Scott.”
This was the first Hambo win for trainer Rick Zeron and a second for Scott – who won with Marion Marauder in 2016.
Atlanta paid $6.40 to win and became the 14th filly in Hambletonian history to win the most prestigious race in harness racing.
“She’s the best horse I’ve ever drove,” said the younger Zeron. “The mile just got away from me and I was really mad at myself for letting her take advantage of that and get a little weak on the end. That’s not the way I wanted to head into the final. But I said, If she was a champion she would bounce back and she did.”
