2018 Iditarod Results: Norwegian Musher Joar Leifseth Ulsom Wins

Posted in Dog Racing News

The 2018 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is in the books and for the first time in six years, the winning musher didn’t hail from the iconic Seavey mushing family.

Norwegian musher Joar Leifseth Ulsom has won his first Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race last week in a time of 12 days, 20 hours, 13 minutes and 14 seconds.

“It’s unreal,” said Ulsom, 31, via the Anchorage Daily News. “I dreamed about it for a long time and this (is) actually happening. I don’t know what to say — it’s going to sink in at some point.”

The Iditarod began at 10 a.m., on Saturday, March 3 in Anchorage, Alaska and followed a nearly 1,000 mile trail to Nome.

The trail consisted of wetter snow, resulting in slower times compared to previous years when the trail was packed down with colder snow.

Musher Nicolas Petit led his eight-dog team to a second-place showing followed by Mitch Seavey, Ray Redington Jr. and Peter Kaiser. Richie Diehl and rookie musher Jessie Holmes joined the five others as the only teams finishing the race in under 10 days.

Last year, Mitch Seavey became the oldest musher to win the race at the age of 57. Mitch hails from the iconic Seavey mushing family, which has seen one of their kin win the last six Iditarods before this year.

Musher Mitch Seavey set a new record by finishing the race in eight days, three hours, 40 minutes and 13 seconds. The previous record was held by Mitch’s son Dallas Seavey, who recently took third place in Norway’s Finnmarkslopet — the world’s northernmost sled dog race.
