The 2018 Breeders’ Cup Championship took place this past weekend on Nov. 2 and Nov. 3 from Churchill Downs in Kentucky.

The 14-race event was capped by the 14-horse field for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, a $6 million race over 1 1/4 miles.

Race-favorite Accelerate held off Gunnevera to win the Classic by a length to give trainer John Sadler his first Breeders’ Cup win since his initial starter 30 years prior, according to the Associated Press.

Accelerate covered 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.93 and paid $7.40, $6.00 and $4.40.

“He broke really well,” jockey Joel Rosario of his horse, Accelerate. “I was on the outside and had to use him a little bit. I just wanted to get a position because I was way out there. I know I had a long run to the turn but I wanted to be not too wide.

“When I got to the backside I tried to be in the clear, which is what he likes to do.”
