camel-fightingHere is a new one out of the Middle East. While many are familiar with bullfighting here in America, organizers of an annual camel festival in Saudi Arabia lent an interesting touch to this year’s event. They introduced a bullfighting-like contest involving their prized camels.

On Saturday, four members of the audience were picked to feature (fight) in the brand-new contest as part of the festival held outside the capital city of Riyadh.

camel fightingVideos released online showed the contestants chasing young camels inside an iron closure in a desert area. Each competitor was able to bring down the animal. It didn’t seem like it was quite that difficult as many took out the camels long legs.

What Was the Prize?

Owning the camel itself.

Unlike bullfighting, there are no signs of violence or bloodletting in the Saudi replica of the sport. One reason for the lack of violence is that camels are a popular animal closely linked to heritage in the Arabian Peninsula country.

The animal has long been dubbed as the “ship of the desert”, for it being a lifeline for desert dwellers.

There are more than one million camels in Saudi Arabia where they are the centerpieces of different events, including their famous races that have been reported many times on this site.

It seems like this new sport will take off in the Middle East.
