The Hejen Racing Committee and Qatar Shell have agreed to a three-year contract that stipulates Shell continues its official sponsorship for His Highness the Emir of the State of Qatar’s main camel race among tribes from 2019 to 2021.
According to a press release, the contract was signed by Abdullah al-Kuwari, the vice-chairman of the camel racing committee, and Rashid al-Sulaiti, deputy general manager, Qatar Shell.
His Highness the Emir’s Main Camel Race is the final race of a camel racing festival taking place at the Al Sheehaniya camel racing track in Qatar from April 14 to 25.
Camel racing supplements are part of the sport in Qatar, as much as they are part of horse racing in the United States. Racehorsemeds.com is an international supplier of veterinary products to maintain the health of racing camels and to maximize their performance on and off the track.
The main race in April is among tribes and the competition attracts hundreds of trainers from around the Gulf. The winner receives a cash prize, but more importantly, the sword from His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.
Some 6,000 camels from Qatar and elsewhere in the Gulf are expected to compete in the festival with races run over distances of 4, 6 and 8km.
“We are delighted that Shell is signing for another three years to continue its sponsorship of His Highness the Emir’s main race among tribes,” Al-Kuwari said in a statement.
“Shell’s support in promoting this event over the last six years has attracted a wider audience and proven to be beneficial to the sport. We take great pride in the cultural sport of camel racing, and I look forward to witnessing some exciting races this year.”
