Where are the greyhounds supposed to go once the racing ends in 2020?

As many know who read the blogs here at, greyhound racing is scheduled to come to an end in Florida in December 2020. Once the racing ends, there is one major question that will need to be addressed for the benefit of those greyhound dogs that were racing. That question is, “What happens to the greyhounds when Florida dog racing ends?”

What Did the Voters Say

Florida voters decided the ending outcome with the passing of Amendment 13 last year. This amendment voted to end dog racing. Many voters were quite satisfied with the results, but, despite that, one question was left looming in many minds of the voters.

“What is going to happen to the racing dogs, when the last race is over?”

There is good news for those concerned, and the greyhounds. Work is already being done to make sure that every dog that does not continue to race at another state’s track (i.e Iowa) will find a home.

That’s something the Gulf Coast Humane Society, an organization that supported the state and national Humane Society organizations to pass Amendment 13 was in favor of the races endings.

“When you see all these other states also banning greyhound racing… where there’s smoke there’s fire,” said Jennier Galloway the executive director for the Gulf Coast Humane Society.

Where are the Dogs Gonna Go

Traditionally, the humane society has not taken in many greyhounds – there’s a reason for that.

“They’re a tight-knit group (greyhound adoption groups). They’re very passionate about greyhounds, and you know they make sure that those dogs are taken in and safely taken care of,” Galloway said.

Despite not being happy about the outcome of Amendment 13 passing, GST Sun State Adoption said it’s ready for that last race.

“Over 200,000 greyhounds have acclimated from the track to the home,” said Sharon Dipple, who works for GST Sun State Adoption. “The reason the dogs do so well is not because they change overnight from when you go to the kennels to adoption, it’s from their upbringing.”

Dipple and GST have a very close relationship with Naples-Fort Myers Grey Hounds Racing & Poker. While there is racing, Dipple is there with greyhounds ready to be adopted.

Dipple admits she does not know what’s going to happen to her, or others like her at tracks across the state when the racing stops. She does concede though, that the dogs will be well.
